VR 202 - Vikriti And Roga Vijñāna (Ayurvedic & Western Aetiopathophysiology)

The doṣās are not simply the dynamic energy within the body, rather, they are influenced by various external and internal factors.  Knowledge of these factors is germane to the balancing of the doshas.  Each doṣa undergoes three basic changes, namely;  a) increase or accumulation (sanchaya),  b) aggravation or provocation (prakopa); and restoration or alleviation (prasamana) of its quantity (pramana), guṇa (quality) or karma (action). Knowing the manifestation (lakshana) at each stage is the key to its management.  Though diseases are of many kinds and pathogens are of many varieties, all are products of disharmonies of the tridoṣās (vāta, pitta, and kapha).  When the disturbances are nit rectified, the doshas undergo six stages of pathogenesis (shad kriyā kāla).  The Ayurvedic approach to disease management is the holistic view of the causative factors rather than the conventional or modern approach of deductive view of managing the symptoms.  This module will emphasise both approaches to provide a comprehensive approach.  The core module lectures are enriched with online video lectures from the Great Courses Company delivered by professors and world-class experts engaged in cutting-edge research on mind-body physiology.
